Vacations in the UK seem to be incredibly popular this year, most likely due to the the current economy and the low value of the pound. England has many top tourist destinations including London (the English capital) and other fascinating cities plus a collection of seaside resorts such as; Blackpool, Eastbourne, Bognor Regis and Clacton-on-Sea. One seaside town often overlooked is Plymouth in the south of England.

At first glance Plymouth appears rather plain and principally modern, but searching a little bit deeper and you will very quickly discover that the city has a rich history and a deep association with the sea. As far back as the fifteen hundreds Plymouth has been an important port. In fifteen eighty eight Francis Drake set sail from the port to successfully defend the English by defeating the Spanish Armada. A further moment in history occurred in sixteen twenty when port witnessed the embarkation of the Pilgrim Fathers.

It is possible to take cheap Plymouth vacations by booking bed and breakfast in Plymouth rather than booking rooms in a expensive hotel. A quick search on Yahoo will show that rooms are available from as little as £29 a night and many guest houses offer dinners at a very reasonable rate, commonly equal to, or less costly than local restaurants.

Tourist Attractions In Plymouth

There are numerous places to visit in Plymouth. Popular tourist attractions include; Smeaton’s Tower and Plymouth Dome, the Royal Citadel, the National Marine Aquarium and Merchant’s House Museum. A boat cruise around the port is an interesting way to spend some time and if you discover that you have more time to spare why not take a trip to other places near to Plymouth, for example; Mount Edgcumbe, Buckland Abbey or Saltram House.

Saltram House is a fine Tudor Mansion which is situated two miles from the town of Plymouth, Mount Edgcumbe is another fine example of a Tudor house with landscaped gardens, coastal paths and parklands, and Buckland Abbey, about six miles from Plymouth, is a Cistercian abbey which was once owned by Sir Francis Drake and was later converted into a family home.

If you and your family are currently deciding upon spending some time in the city of Plymouth it is vital that you book your room at the earliest moment because, sadly Plymouth guest houses and hotels tend to be surprisingly busy and are commonly fully booked for a long period in advance. If your family is large you may find that apartments in Plymouth prove to be cheap option to bed and breakfast in Plymouth. If you are visiting the UK from abroad then you should consider making a reservation for a room in hotels in London to take in the attractions of the capital city of England too.

London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, has numerous tourist attractions, many of which are amongst the most popular in the country. For generations London has been a popular vacation destination and much of this interest is due to the immensity of the historical buildings and the unique culture. While many of the visitor attractions found in London have a historic interest, such as the Houses of Parliament, The Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, there are many that are only recent additions, such as the London Aquarium, and the youngest of these is the London Eye.

Many still refer to the London Eye as the Millennium Wheel, the reason being that it was built to commemorate then end of the old millenium and celebrate the new. It was officially opened by the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in the evening of December 31 but, sadly, there were technical issues and it was not opened to the public until March 2000. Standing 135m above London it has become an unmistakable, and highly visible, landmark.

In 1895, in Earl’s Court, was the Great Wheel of London, a giant Ferris Wheel which could carry around 1,600 people at a time. Unfortunately it was demolished in 1907 but today London has a replacement in the London Eye. Although it is not the largest Ferris wheel in the world it can legitimately claim to be the worlds largest cantilever observation tower!

Although the London Eye cannot carry as many people as the Great Wheel of London could it can manage to carry 25 people in each of its 32 capsules. In contrast to a Ferris wheel it is possible to get up and walk around in a pod but you may find that you want to sit down as it takes about half an hour for it to complete a full revolution.

With as many as three and a half million people “flying” on the London Eye a year it is now one of the most popular attractions in London. The most common reason for taking a trip is to experience one of the finest views across London. From the top of the wheel it is possible to see the surrounding four miles and you can see a multitude of famous London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court Palace, St Paul’s and Westminster Abbey. One view which will stay with you is the spectacular view of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben’s clock face.

The London Eye has proved to be a popular spot for marriage proposals and weddings and they now offer special wedding packages. When booking a flight it is also possible to book other things such as educational trips for small groups of students of all ages.

If you are planning a vacation to London or just a weekend break it is well worth taking the opportunity to take a ride on this incredible visitor attraction. If your time in London is limited it is a real time saver as you are able to take in nearly all of the most important London landmarks during the 30 minute trip which is impossible to do any other way (excluding a helicopter or balloon ride).

If you are looking for accommodation in London you may appreciate the listings of hotels near the London Eye or the cheap London hotels listed on http://www.londonhotelhelper.com/

Staying in a one of the cottages in Ashford, a town which is located on the banks of the river is a great choice your Peak District holiday. It is located north of Bakewell and is a very unique part of Derbyshire as well as the Peak District so there is plenty to do in easy reach of the village.

Peak District tourism attracts millions of visitors to the area each year and Ashford should definitely be on your Peak District Accommodation shortlist.

There are many places that are worthy of a visit here such as the Holy Trinity Church which like many others in the region is centuries old. There are some spectacular places to visit while you are on holiday, such as The Holy Trinity Church. Some sections of the Holy Trinity Church date back to the 13th century. The church had to be rebuilt in the late 1800’s, but a few items of the past still survive.

The north arcade still stands, which originates from the 14th century. The west tower, south door, and lower section of the church still have the Norman tympanum which shows the tree of life with a hog and wolf face to face.

The church also has a number of artefacts that date from the 1600’s which include a chalice, a Jacobean pulpit, as well as a Perp style font.

An ancient custom from the 1700’s was to hang funeral garland made of white paper that had been cut into rosettes and attached to a wooden frame, then carried in front of the coffin in the funeral procession, then hung up on the roof of the church, which four of them are still hanging there today.

The village once was an industry for candle making; however, there is only one house in the place of the old factory, located on Greaves Lane.

One of the most picturesque things you will find here is the Sheep Wash Bride. Historically this was used as a packhorse bridge, and later on it became popular with sheep herders who were able to wash their flocks here before shearing.

Ashford has long been known for all of the black marble that is produces. Once the marble is polished to a shine, it is used in mosaics, jewellery, table tops, and clocks. You can find black marble tables in the Ashford Church and throughout the U.S., as this type of marble has become very popular.

One of the most fascinating features in Ashford is the revived custom of well dressing, which takes place on Trinity Sunday, this very special event has 6 wells that are dressed with layering leaves and many other natural objects in a bed of clay to form a picture. There are approximately 12,000 or so spectators that visit the church during Well Dressing Week.

Notable properties in the area include Ashford Hall which overlooks a beautiful lake that is part of the River Wye. Built in 1785 by Joseph Pickford, Ashford Hall has a lot of history and today it is privately owned and belongs to the Olivier family.

Just a short distance down the road from Ashford is a Georgian T shaped house known as Thornbridge Hall, it was privately owned until the middle of the 20th century where it changed hands and became a teacher’s training college, then after a period of time then it became an educational center, it is now once again privately owned and used as and antique shop.

If your not staying at holiday at one of the holiday cottages in Ashford definitely make sure it is on your list of places to visit especially if you are taking a holiday during Well Dressing week.

England is a most beautiful and wonderful country in which to take a vacation. It has a great many tourist attraction|places of interest well worth visiting perfect for all tastes. For instance|One such place is the ancient city of York which has been inhabited since the times of the Roman Empire, Liverpool, and Torquay known as the English Riviera. One of the most interesting, and famous, places to visit is London the capital city of the U. K.

London is an astounding destination to visit, maybe for just a weekend or, possibly for a longer period. You would be surprised at the number of people who live in the United Kingdom of Great Britain who have not yet visited London, even more surprising when you ponder on the fact it is commonly top of the majority of visitors lists (of places they enjoyed most).

There are so many things to see and do in London that it is simply not possible to list them all at the same time. Surprisingly one of the newest attractions in London also happens to be one of the most popular – The London Eye. Another popular attraction nearby to the London Eye is the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. However, one place which must not be missed is Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace is England’s most well known Royal residence, possibly because it is home to the Queen of England. The Palace is positioned right at the heart of London which makes it a natural focus for tourists. The daily pageant of ‘Changing of the Guard’ is interesting to witness and ever so English.

Buckingham Palace was originally known as Buckingham House. It was originally a large townhouse, built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. It is actually the town house that forms the main core of the palace as we know it today.

Throughout the next seventy five years Buckingham House was increased in size by the construction of 3 wings creating a central courtyard. The main architects responsible for these constructions were Edward Blore and John Nash. It was also John Nash who was responsible for the interior design of the monumental staterooms.

The famous architect Aston Webb was responsible for the building of the principal facade of Buckingham Palace which he re-designed in 1912. Webb together with the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock were the winners of a competition to design a memorial to Queen Victoria. This memorial is still standing today.

The Queen has a number of royal residences besides Buckingham Palace. Annually the Queen stays, at Sandringham House in Norfolk, during the Christmas season. Sandringham House is one of the Queen’s private royal residences.

Another private residence is Balmoral Castle, found in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth was in Balmoral Castle when she was informed about the sad demise of Princess Diana.

If you would like to take a break in England you might be pleased to discover that it is possible to find cheap hotels in London without any great effort, on the other hand you may want to stay in more luxurious surroundings and the small number of boutique hotels in London should be more than satisfactory.
