What do you get for someone when you visit her/him for the first time?

Madhajj asked:

My PhD supervisor invited all our research group to his place next week, this is the first time for me to enter his house! In my country it is a shame to enter someone’s house for the first time with empty hands, so we usually get sweets or chocolates and sometimes flowers! So is it the same thing for German or British people? (He is German and living in England) If so can you please suggest what should I get?

You should take something – as this is the custom in Germany and England, but nothing too lavish.

I suggest an unusual German beer from your local supermarket – most have a good selection. If that is inappropriate, then a medium sized tin of biscuits is also an idea – especially as you can all share them over tea etc.

yes we have a similar custom in England too … sweets, chocolates and flowers would all be good gifts to bring … sometimes people bring a bottle of wine, cake, biscuits etc … have you any idea what sort of things he likes? because it’s no use taking chocolates to someone who is on a slimming diet, or flowers to someone who has hay fever … don’t take a very big gift as that would be embarrassing

you will make a very good and polite guest !!
