Advisable to travel during winter in Europe?

mtmAsk asked:

We’re from Asia where weather here is 35 degrees and are planning to visit Europe (Rome, Venice, Switzerland, Paris, London) in December during winter. It’ll be our first time to Europe. is it advisable to visit during winter?

Expect very cold weather in Switzerland in winter. Paris is likely to be the coldest of the other places in December. London generally has very mild winters (though last winter happened to be one of the coldest in living memory, it was a rarety.)

Great Britain usually has mild winters, with the coldest part of the winter in February and March. Central Europe has long cold winters. Expect reasonably comfortable weather in Italy.

Just pack some warm clothing and you will have no problems,in the lowlands it will be ok,but in the mountainous regions it will obviously be much colder.

You will feel the cold. It is generally around freezing point in Europe round that time. That is colder than your fridge.
In December snow is very unlikely, except for Switzerland, and even there you will have to go up the mountains most years.

You can travel Europe, but do dress for it.
Wear layers, a silk pajama, or several, under your jeans. (I have been told that you can wear up to 5 before it shows.)
Buy warm sweaters in Europe, as at home you will not be able to get warm ones.
Wear mittens or skiing gloves and hats, again, you might need to buy in Europe.
Rome and Venice are less cold than Paris and London but you will not feel the difference much, all being so much colder than you are used to.

In short, No, I would not advice you to travel in Europe this time of year if you can go an other time too, but if this is the only time you can, make sure you are prepared and you will still enjoy the experience.

There’s no problem. You will just need some warm clothing and a thick jacket, hat, scarf and gloves.

I live in northern Italy and travel in Europe throughout the year. Usually, December is cold, but not bad for travel here. There are some interesting things to see and do that can only be done in December. For example, in Rome, there’s the Christmas market in Piazza Navona or the 100 presepi (nativity scenes) exhibition in Sala Bramonte. Or the nativity in St Peter’s square at the Vatican. Most of the normal tourist attractions (other than things like waterparks) will be open.

In Venice, you may have some days where there is some flooding. Usually, it isn’t too bad and you can just wait for the tide to go out to be back to normal. There are raised walkways put out in some areas. You can get some interesting pictures then anyway. Some days may have fog, but those are interesting in Venice. It’s easy to believe you’re back in the renaissance city then. Rather this is good for you or not depends on your tolerance for the colder weather. Basically, if you dress warmly it should be okay.
