How amazing that we are able to escape the modern day and experience the sights and sounds of Belgium in the middle ages. A visit to modern day Bruges will equip you with just that as little has changed in this cobble ridden Gothic city. This western Flanders city, back in the day prospered on account of the elaborately woven lace that was once its chief domestic product. Ladies everywhere of a certain wealth would claw one another’s eyes out for a collar of this fabulous lace. Aside from the lace and the chocolate, one thing Bruges has in multitudes is canals. Nicknamed, the “Venice of the North”, you won’t find a Rialto Bridge or a Bridge of Sighs but you will enjoy endless romantic walks and boat rides alongside stunning buildings.
Bruges is without doubt one of the beautiful cities of Europe if not a little understated! Small but perfectly formed, you could swap the Ostend Bruges Airport hire car for a day and enjoy a casual stroll to take in all that is on offer in this stunning UNESCO World Heritage city centre.
