When you visit Sofia an overwhelming sense of time and history immediately overcomes you. You feel as though you have just stepped into a city with many centuries of struggle and heritage. Despite this, Sofia is also a vibrant metropolis where everything you wish for can be satisfied from a double expresso to a copy of your daily newspaper. Despite all the change that has gone on throughout the years, Sofia has remained commercially and culturally strong. If only we could go back in time and see for ourselves the great city during its relative infancy. You need a time machine not a Sofia hire car to travel back to the 4th century BC, but this was when Alexander the Great’s father ruled the empire.
You may not need a time machine however, thanks to the cities great and old churches such as the Boyana Church from the 10th century and the magnificent Alexander Nevski Cathedral.
