My mother pointed out one in Oxford called ‘Backpackers’ which she went to but we think it may have closed down or relocated :/

Skip Africa. Concentrate on Europe, Eastern Europe, Greece Russia.
For Africa, it’s far better to join an overland adventure tour for a few weeks/months. Transport, food and accommodation is all included – and you’ll be able to go to places you’d NEVER get to on your own. There’s a good list on The Travellers Lounge bacpackers website:
Regarding flights, it may be cheaper to book europe as a seperate trip, then get an open-jaw ticket for Africa.
