Just buy a the lonely Planet book on whatever country you wish to visit or their webpage you will find everything and I mean everything you need to know right there.

if your under 30 you can apply for a 12 month working holiday visa and try to pick up work as you travel around

whatever you decide to do make sure you have the appropriate visa

I think you need to ask yrself a few questions:

    1) What’s the minimum standard of accomodation I’m willing to accept? The first time I visted Oz I took a tent and camped in most places- it was dirt cheap. I camped in the Blue Mountains, on an island in the Whitsundays, Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands, the Barossa Valley, Alice Springs etc..- it was great- but I wouldn’t want to do it again. The 2nd time I stayed in youth hostels and cheap hotels and it was considerably more expensive. I now live in Cottesloe in Perth- and that’s even more expensive again!
    2) How am I going to travel? If you’re going for a while- buy a car and sell it when you leave. Just be prepared for the distances- it’s hard to get used to- I drove to Kalgoolie from Perth last month- 650km- on the map it looks like you’ve covered no distance at all. A mate drove from Perth to the Pinnacles desert- he thought it was only half an hour away (it looks so close on the map!)- he was still driving 3 hrs later…
    3) How long to spend. I’d say (if you’re driving around and want to see quite a bit of stuff) it’ll take you a minimum of 4-5 months to get an idea- and you really need much longer.
    4) If you can cook for yrself (most YHs have cooking facilities and most public parks and beaches have BBQ facilities)- do it!
    5) As for a budget- see above! Even if you’re on the lowest budget though make sure you leave some cash for the things that you’ll remember for the rest of yr life (Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef for example!)

Whatever you do though- enjoy yrself- Australia’s a fantastic country, the people are great, there’s loads to see, and whilst it’s a long way between places- the journey’s worth it!
