Comments on: What is your opinion on gap year taken by students leaving school?

i have an opportunity givn by the school the travel to a foreign country to experience their culture. I’m looking into Turkey [they're only offering countries that have languages that are dying out and Turkey looks better than the other places] and i want to spend a year there. I started school early anyway, a year early actually so I won’t be behind. the thing is, i don’t want to return to school with different people while everyone else i know graduates before me.. which is why im thinking about spending a semester instead. there is an intensive summer option, but i don’t know if i could go in the summer… ahhhh i dont know what to do here!

i really want to go to Turkey and experience a different life, and scholarships are offered too! but i don’t want to be left ‘behind’.

I dont completely agree with a year gap as it becomes very difficult to RE-concentrate on studies after a gap. But if you are not completely detached from studies and your habit of working hard, a gap is fun!

I totally agree with it! I’m doing it at the moment. Disadvantages? There aren’t any, it makes no difference if you graduate from university one year later that the rest of the people in your generation

Gap Years are just another way of putting off the inevitable day when a person has to go and find a job. Coupled with so-called Higher Education they merely serve to delay the realisation that the world does not owe you a living but you have to go out and earn it.

I agree with it completely. I took a year off before pursuing any further education, because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to even attend college for. The extra year made me get a better perspective on life, and the things I wanted to accomplish.

I also found a job.
After I have my baby, an eye clinic I go to, the doctor has offered me a job, willing to pay me for all of my training, and any possible schooling needed. And this time next year I will be an ophthalmologic nurse!

I took a year off to work and ear money. Somehow the experience made me more mature and did a lot better in school. Disadvantage, I kinda forgot some lessons, kinda hard to freshen your brain again.

im currently taking a gap year and i think it has many advantages
it helped me make the decision of what i want to do with the rest of my life
it gave me time to go back to school and upgrade.
gave me experience with a full-time job and allowed me to save money up for school.
Disadvantages are mainly that you might not end up going to school at all if you take a gap year.
I personally think the advantages outweighed the disadvantages, because i wouldn’t want to spend a year in college and then figure out i want to do something else and end up wasting at least 12000 dollars on something i’ll probably never use.

Agreed.

Before saying you love a place or person so much, you have nothing as which to back it up with, so seeing the world is a massive advantage, as it adds character, knowledge and Confidence.

Its only bad, if you sit at home and waste it, Lol.

Ive heard that you just get distracted (either by all the traveling or the volunteer work, or you find a job you get settled into) and it becomes very difficult to motivate yourself to go back to school.

you get like 3 months off inbetween HS and college, just take full advantage of that and you should get your kicks out.

plus each winter break is like a month and each summer is another 3 months so youll be getting some nice (and deserved) breaks while in school too ^^

I think its great , you get to travell and get to know more about your self and what you are growing up in and what your about to enter . !!!!!!! .
