Where are the best places to go traveling on a gap year?

Pea asked:

Before i go to uni I want to travel for 5-6 months and I’m completely clueless on where to start as i want to see the whole world (impossible, i know). But i’m not looking for the cliched gap year places like Thailand and India, not that i wouldn’t love to go there, but I want to find places that are not filled with tourists. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Also—- I’m from UK so preferably out of Europe

Europes the best place in the world for tourism so not going there atleast for a bit would make it more dull haha

Why out of Europe, Costa Del Sol Spain has a lovely weather all year round, it is affordable and nice.

visit for holiday rentals and see Miraflores Hills it is amazing.

Other places like Mexico and Cariibean yes they are cheap but many Hurricanes and troubles.

I realize you are rather young to be doing this, but I know you could come to China and teach English at a high school to kids about your age. You would just be teaching conversational English, so you would spend several hours a day just talking with classes of students about anything you wanted. Your teaching would consist of occasionally correcting their pronunciation. I promise you would be loved by your students. I can recommend some beautiful and interesting locations. It would be a great experience.

I’d check out the following website

It’s a company called i-to-i that specialise in rips for gap years, either orientated around physical challenges or some fantastic volunteering work.

They go all over the world – South America, Australia, Africa and Asia and you can do work in a variety of fields – conservation and environment work, teaching English as a foreign language, building schools. It’s all based around doing great work in small communities while still seeing amazing places (as opposed to the tourist experience.)

I’ve looked at it with regard to my gap year and its fantastic!

    Good luck!
