Hot Holidays In Playa Blanca

January 22nd, 2010 — 08:19 am

The newest resort to be developed on the island of Lanzarote is Playa Blanca. With much of its holiday accommodation constructed during the last ten years, it has an excellent range of modern and stylish villas available to rent, with equally good hotels arrayed along its coastline.

The reasons behind this resort’s growth are tied up with its close proximity to the six beautiful beaches of Papagayo. Regarded as some of the best beaches in the whole Canarian archipelago, they consist of coves and larger stretches of golden sand. Surrounded by crystal clear waters that make ideal scuba-diving spots, the beaches remain very unspoilt.

They can still only be reached by a dirt track road, water taxi or on foot along the coastal pathway. And continue to have fairly limited facilities, so visitors are usually advised to come well equipped with food, drink and a sunshade.

In the town itself, there are three sandy beaches. The most central of which also gives its name to Playa Blanca. On the western side there is Playa Flamingo, which is surrounded by lovely mature tropical gardens. And on the eastern side there is Playa Dorada, stretching out in front of the Princesa Yaiza hotel.

Due to its southerly position, a holiday in Playa Blanca will usually feel a couple of degrees warmer than in the other resorts, as the local micro-climate intensifies the sun’s heat. Allowing visitors the chance to make the best use of the private pools and outdoor Jacuzzi’s that nearly all holiday villas in Playa Blanca enjoy.

The town also serves as a good base for exploring the island, especially the southern half, which is home to the Timanfaya National Park. Rather than being a green and verdant space planted with numerous trees, the park is located at the site of the volcanic eruptions that shook Lanzarote between 1730-36.

Tourists therefore get to see any number of craters and cones, twisted fields of lava and molten rock. And if they choose to dine at the El Diablo restaurant, they can also see their food being cooked on one of the most unusual barbecues in the world. Harnessing the geothermal heat that is still extremely intense just below the earth’s surface, the grill hovers over an open fissure in the ground.

Also within close reach of Playa Blanca is the village of Yaiza. Voted twice over Spain’s prettiest village, it is lucky to still be standing at all, having avoided burial under a tidal wave of lava.

After the excitement went away I realized that being in a country where I dont speak any other languages is very scary. I plan to visit major cities in Germany, France, Spain, and maybe Sweden/Finland. Im not soo worried about france and germany because I can at least try to speak those languages.. my main fear is Germany due to the harsh and hard to learn language. are my fears well founded?

Best Time to Visit London

January 20th, 2010 — 02:08 pm
Summer is probably the busiest season for London when most of the tourists flood the city. A lot depends on the weather but if it turns out nice, summer is probably the best time to visit London.

July is usually sunny and the city is getting ready for the City of London Festival of Music and Theatre, Covent Garden Festival, Wimbledon tennis championships and Hyde Park summer concerts. Eric Clapton is coming in June to perform with Sheryl Crow and John Mayer at Hyde Park. August is probably the most active month of the summer – Notting Hill Carnival, which attracts millions of people from all around the world takes place as well as the Hyde Park Proms – both of these events make hotel prices soar. Central London hotels are perfect as you can either walk to venues like The Proms at Hyde Park or travel shortly.

Autumn is a good time to visit London as well. It is still warm and dry. Theatres present a range of new shows and there are many events taking place. September is probably the best option, because October and November are often glum, dark and generally unpleasant for sightseeing. However, it is good to visit for a few days to attend an event.

Winter season is not bad in London. There is no snow and it’s not that cold as in many other countries. The mood is cheerful as Christmas is approaching and the city looks nice if it doesn’t rain. It is good to travel after December as most hotels drop prices, but the atmosphere changes drastically – people have post-Christmas blues.

It is good to stay at central London hotels at any time of the year to avoid travelling long distances and wasting time in tubes or undergrounds. Any season of the year in London might be subject to change – English weather doesn’t conform to the forecast so it is worth considering few options to visit London, once you choose your travel dates – one if it rains, the other – if it doesn’t.

For a first time visit to Scandinavia, which country is best? Sweden? Norway? Denmark?

January 19th, 2010 — 10:38 am
Armando M asked:

I have a globe trotting aunt who wants to visit countries in Europe and she is asking me which one is best. She wants the one with the nicest sights within the city (parks, castles, museum, etc.), good food and speaks good English. She plans to go to the Spring, so no problem about the cold, I suppose.

Any thoughts?
