Attention all passengers of ‘swine flu airways’!

June 30th, 2009 — 07:06 am

With alerts for swine flu at a premium, travelling with a cold or the symptoms of flu can leave you feeling more than run down! Sitting in an airport departures lounge in the midst of a nasty coughing fit all I could feel was paranoid and nervous that everyone would think that I had swine flu and that it was my deadly intention to infect everybody sitting there!

Of course, nothing could be further from my mind but I did begin to realise how other people nursing a cold are feeling!

According to the article “Swine flu quarantine warning for visitors to China!” the officials at Chinese airports are not taking any chances. Not only are they confining people displaying flu-like symptoms, they are also banging up people just for flying in on the same plane as them.

The warning is make sure your travel insurance covers you for unexpected quarantine confinement while visiting China because it could happen to you. Even if you aren’t even ill!

Handing back to the travel professionals!

June 30th, 2009 — 06:39 am

So many people have had to learn the hard way but the time has come for us to act responsibly and to book our summer holidays through a recognised travel agent.

According to the article “Know your rights as a holiday package consumer?” we should not rest on our laurels. It is vital that we familiarise ourselves with the terms and conditions of a package holiday paying particular attention to the dreaded small print especially that of the cancellation policy.

There’s comfort in the fact that under the package holidays and travel trade act 1995 the information contained within all travel brochures should be accurate so there is no more leaving your holiday to chance! Thank goodness! We can all breathe a sigh of relief as we hand over the serious business of booking all our holidays over to the professionals. Change is not always a good thing but in the case the changes to the holiday market are a big beautiful step in the right direction for all of us!

French lighthouses – beautiful and vital

June 30th, 2009 — 01:29 am

Lighthouses in France stand as dramatic testaments to the country’s marine tradition. Although many are now sadly in a state of disrepair, their architectural beauty and cultural importance make them a must-see for holidaymakers in France. French lighthouses are obscure cultural treasures that hark back to a largely forgotten era of Gallic supremacy . All over the French shore, the lighthouses – or phare as they are called in France – have stood up to the worst that the Channel and the Atlantic Ocean hurl at them for many years. These spectacular structures punctuate the horizon around the shore, forming a marvellous network of signal lights originally designed to secure the lives of French sailors and ensure the integrity of France’s shipping lanes. Brittany is home to some of the most beautiful lighthouses, along with the Île D’Ouessant just off the mainland. A rocky, weather-beaten area of land that’s only 5km by 8km long, the island is home to a number of truly splendid historical lighthouses, both onshore and off. Surrounded by intense currents and deceptive outcrops of hidden rocks, the island has claimed many lives over the centuries, making its lighthouses of crucial practical importance for shipping navigating through this dangerous area. The lighthouses on the island are some of the most attractive to be found anywhere in France. From the short, square Phare de Kermorvan with its rugged stone facing to the simple yet robust sophistication of the Phare du Petit Minou, the Île D’Ouessant showcases some truly amazing feats of engineering and practical architecture. The lighthouses are even more magnificant when one considers that most were built in the early years of the nineteenth century, when building techniques were nowhere near as advanced as they are today. The fact that these structures are still standing in the face of such severe weather conditions is a credit to the skill and tenacity of the men who built them. Reaching the Île D’Ouessant is simple – just catch a Caen channel ferry to France and make your way to Brest in Brittany. There the twice a day ferry will ship you over to the island for a very modest fee. Once there, you can explore the island on foot or by bike, taking in the unique sights of these commanding silent guards.

I want to join the police but I am also planning on taking a gap year and travelling around the world. Does anyone know if I can train for the police and then take a gap year or if I will just have to wait until I am back before I apply for the police? Please advise. Thanks

London Landmarks And The London Eye

June 21st, 2009 — 01:27 am

London, the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, has numerous tourist attractions, many of which are amongst the most popular in the country. For generations London has been a popular vacation destination and much of this interest is due to the immensity of the historical buildings and the unique culture. While many of the visitor attractions found in London have a historic interest, such as the Houses of Parliament, The Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, there are many that are only recent additions, such as the London Aquarium, and the youngest of these is the London Eye.

Many still refer to the London Eye as the Millennium Wheel, the reason being that it was built to commemorate then end of the old millenium and celebrate the new. It was officially opened by the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in the evening of December 31 but, sadly, there were technical issues and it was not opened to the public until March 2000. Standing 135m above London it has become an unmistakable, and highly visible, landmark.

In 1895, in Earl’s Court, was the Great Wheel of London, a giant Ferris Wheel which could carry around 1,600 people at a time. Unfortunately it was demolished in 1907 but today London has a replacement in the London Eye. Although it is not the largest Ferris wheel in the world it can legitimately claim to be the worlds largest cantilever observation tower!

Although the London Eye cannot carry as many people as the Great Wheel of London could it can manage to carry 25 people in each of its 32 capsules. In contrast to a Ferris wheel it is possible to get up and walk around in a pod but you may find that you want to sit down as it takes about half an hour for it to complete a full revolution.

With as many as three and a half million people “flying” on the London Eye a year it is now one of the most popular attractions in London. The most common reason for taking a trip is to experience one of the finest views across London. From the top of the wheel it is possible to see the surrounding four miles and you can see a multitude of famous London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court Palace, St Paul’s and Westminster Abbey. One view which will stay with you is the spectacular view of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben’s clock face.

The London Eye has proved to be a popular spot for marriage proposals and weddings and they now offer special wedding packages. When booking a flight it is also possible to book other things such as educational trips for small groups of students of all ages.

If you are planning a vacation to London or just a weekend break it is well worth taking the opportunity to take a ride on this incredible visitor attraction. If your time in London is limited it is a real time saver as you are able to take in nearly all of the most important London landmarks during the 30 minute trip which is impossible to do any other way (excluding a helicopter or balloon ride).

If you are looking for accommodation in London you may appreciate the listings of hotels near the London Eye or the cheap London hotels listed on http://www.londonhotelhelper.com/
