I am a huge Anglophile! I have wanted to visit England, since I was a child. I want to see all the places I have read about; London, Yorkshire, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Nottinghamshire, etc. My fear is that I will be disappointed. I have this image of England from novels and history books. What will I find in England? How should I go about planning the best trip? Please suggest hostels, bed and breakfasts, and tours. Thank you!
I will be in England for 3 weeks.
I plan on visiting England during the summer and traveling by train.

That’s what travel agents are for…
Don’t worry, you will never forget your trip to England! The dirt of London, the fake Shakespeare stuff in SuA, the faded glory of Bath. Just kidding.
I have visited England on numerous occasions and I always liked it a lot. My most memorable trip was a unplanned visit to Brixton in London during the riots of the 80s. I will remember it for the rest of my life!
As a special tip, try to see a lot of small local stuff, not the big tourist traps. ENgland is very big in small local stuff like local fairs, small museums etc.
If you go to London you will not be disappointed. THis will sound touristy and boring but TAKE THE BIG RED BUS TOUR! You will see the busses and there are several stops you can take it up on. Make sure you can hear the guide because they tell you this great history information along the way. As faras a hostel in London. I stayed in Bayswater. It was semi cheap for a hospital and had lunch and breakfast that were good. I read Ken Follet Pillars of the Earth and other books of his and it wasnt disapointing for me!
Hi Coretta.
Need more info here – how do you plan to travel in Britain? How long are you here? How many of you are coming? What budget are we talking?
As a general rule, go to (youth hostel association). plan your trip around their hostels, they are as good as you can get, you will meet lots of people and they are everywhere (including London, which is VERY expensive otherwise).
London, Haworth-Whitby-York (all in Yorkshire), Bath and Stratford are all nice. Skip Nottinghamshire, go to Hexham and explore Hadrians Wall instead. North Wales has lots of good stuff packed close together (the town of Conway, Betws-y-coed, Caernarfon Castle, Snowdonia, Portmeirion. )
Check the National Trust website. They do a special membership for visitors and they have nearly all the cool old stuff you seem to like, it will save you a bomb – Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire, Housestead at Hadrians Wall, Stonehenge, Erddig in North Wales, hundreds of stately homes and nice places.
Drop me an email any time.
Enjoy, Steve.
