There’s so much more to Lanzarote than just beaches and year round sunshine. As this cool little Canary Island boasts an abundance of cultural attractions – as well as a wealth of natural wonders. Making it an ideal destination for those who like to combine soaking up the sun with taking in the sights.
Holidays in Lanzarote first started to grow in popularity during the early 1970´s. And the island rapidly evolved to the point where it was welcoming 2 million visitors a year during the 1980´s. A level of arrivals that can in part be attributed to the fact that there is just so much to do and see here. As well as a great choice of quality accommodation in Lanzarote.
Undoubtedly the best known and most famous attraction are the breathtaking Fire Mountains. A huge volcanic region created by enormous eruptions around 250 years ago. Which transformed much of the interior of the island into a lunar scape. Indeed the scenery here is so surreal that it has been used as location for numerous movies. Most recently the latest release from Pedro Almodovar, Broken Embraces.
It’s tough to match the majesty of the Volcano Park as the scenery is so awe inspiring. But there are still plenty of other volcanic attractions to visit. Such as the Green Lagoon – another enormously photogenic legacy of the eruptions. Which is basically a green lake locked within a black sand beach. Created by a chance interaction between minerals and algae – which provided the location for key scenes in the sci-fi classic One Million Years BC.
Elsewhere on the island the artist Cesar Manrique worked with this volcanic terrain to develop unusual visitor attractions. Such as his own house and studio which was cleverly constricted over five bubbles in the lava flow. And which is today home to the César Manrique Foundation.
However Manrique saved his greatest creation for a collapsed lave tube in the north of the island. Which he transformed into the Jameos del Agua – a multi function attraction which is part auditorium, part concert venue and part nightclub.
There’s so much so see on the island that’s its best to just jump in a car and explore. Car hire in Lanzarote is cheap and the island is so small it’s impossible to get lost. Making touring a real pleasure. Many locals recommend heading for the north of the island – where visitors can also take in more stunning sights such as the Valley of 1000 Palms.
