Will doing a short course during my Gap year with the OU affect my funding or study at uni in september?

Cherelle A asked:

I am on a gap year at the moment and i am looking to do a couple of short courses with the OU because im missing being in education. I was just wondering whether it could in any way effect my student loan when I apply in the coming weeks.
The courses are just six to eight weeks in length and I am planning on paying for them myself with money I have saved.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank You.

    Hello
The system for assessing funding support applications for short courses at The Open University is slightly different to that for longer courses. These applications now include a means test (based on your income, not parental income) so it may be helpful to speak to a regional adviser for clarification around eligibility and relevance to other student funding for your area. For contact details of your local Regional Centre, see. Ask for Student Services and someone there will be happy to help you.

If you’re interested in continuing study at The Open University, you may wish to have a look at for general information on courses and qualifications. To find out about funding for courses of 30 points or more, use the link to financial support and the ready reckoner to do an initial calculation (currently you may earn up to £16,090 and still qualify for a full financial award, based on your income rather than your parents).

You may also find it useful to look at, a site developed to answer many questions raised by the increasing number of younger students at the Open University.

I wish you well for your gap year and in your future study!
