What to expect, traveling to England?

PeterPan1 asked:

Ok, so I live in America and am goin to visit England soon and need to know a few vital things:

1. How long can I stay over there with a passport?
2. How long do you think it would take to pick up an accent if you were trying? (PLEASE don’t ask why)
3. What are the best places to visit while there? (I am already planning to go to london an liverpool at least)
4. Are there and hot guys over there who would like an American girlfriend? (again, don’t ask)
5. What is the best food to eat while there?
6. How much money should I expect to pay for food and how much should I have for transportation/souvenirs/anything else?
Cheers, I really appreciate it!
Also, what do you british blokes think of american accents? Are they cute to you?

    1. How long can I stay over there with a passport? 6 months

    2. How long do you think it would take to pick up an accent if you were trying? (PLEASE don’t ask why) YEARS! we can hear through it in seconds, but you might be able to convince people at home.

    3. What are the best places to visit while there? (I am already planning to go to london an liverpool at least) Do some of the nice places like Stone Henge and some old houses and castles, stuff you don’t have over there.

    4. Are there and hot guys over there who would like an American girlfriend? (again, don’t ask) There are always guys looking for girlfriends everywhere you go.

    5. What is the best food to eat while there? Nothing here will kill you, you can pretty much eat half the food you have at home, but if you’re shopping for yourselves, be prepared to spend serious money on inferior products, it’s expensive here by comparison.

    6. How much money should I expect to pay for food and how much should I have for transportation/souvenirs/anything else? It very much depends on how long you’re staying and where, if you have to rent a house, think $1000 a month in a normal area (not central London!), food costs twice what you pay now and is about half as good, transportation – well, I paid the same to go from Houston to Mexico as I did to go 60 miles on the bus here. Expect everything to be a lot more expensive – because it is. Look at our gas prices for an idea of what I mean. It’s like $10 a gallon.

Words of advice….a LOT of people will assume you are stupid and will insist on telling you jokes about Americans. Almost half of them will make some kind of unkind remark. Americans tend to be honest and polite while people here are two faced and mean spirited, they will seem nice but when you’re gone they will talk about you, it’s like perpetual high school. Be careful and don’t assume people who are being nice are your friends, they probably think you are rich and are trying to get you to pay for everything. Avoid the TV, it is full of anti-American jokes.

Metal netal has got the answers about right. There is little to add.

Generally the British tolerate Americans well because they know that they will go home, eventually. It is expensive but beware, the £ being worth much more than the $ things might not seem as costly until you count up what you have actually spent.

There are a lot of places you can visit which are free. National Museums and galleries especially in London where the exhibits are plentiful and of a high standard.

There are special tickets for transport where you can travel for a day on any bus are often available and tourist information offices can be worth a visit too they can often offer valuable advice.

Since there is no profit on free things you wont see them advertised much. So here is one

    Otherwise it is

    Or try

    For Liverpool:-

You should also consider, if you have time and the money. visiting YORK and EDINBURGH
