I would advise you to complete your education first-then travel.
Hopefully you’ll be a bit more mature, and able to cope with whatever travelling throws at you!
depends on you and your situation.
some people find a year out gives them the opportunity to get work experience and earn some money to support them through uni.
Others like to take a year out to travel and experience life.
Some people find it easier to carry straight on with their education. If they take a break, they find it harder to go back to studying.
Depends on what you are like as a person and your financial situation i guess.
Depends of how you are going to spend this year. Secure your place at the uni before going away. Have plans not just ideas. consider finances. Do something that you will be proud of for the rest of your life.
i took a ‘gap year’ from 6th form
5 years on i still havent gone back!!!!!!
id recommend you do your education then have a break
Sometimes a gap year is good for you, try going on an adventure such as the Appalachian Trail or many others..check it out…very interesting reading even if you don’t try it….
if you enjoy your subject, go to uni. If your boared of it, take some time to yourself. personally i would get your studying done and dusted.
in my oppinion it completely depends on the person and definately the situation. i finished my 6th year in school this summer, and with being a year younger than everyone else i felt that i wasn’t really ready to jump straight into uni, so i decided to move with my dad to malaysia. okay it isn’t really a gap year as such, but i’m still far far away from home/normality and i’m travelling and seeing a bit of the world and in all honesty it has been the greatest experience for me so far. not only have i met some fantastic people, but i’ve experienced new things, been let in on different cultures (many in malaysias case) and i feel like i’m becomming my own person. i was basically a looser before, very introverted and moving here has forced me to get better social skills, be more tolerant of people and also more patient. you will find that being away from alot of people makes you grow up an awful lot, puts things in perspective too and for me, i’m still dead set on going to university.
other people travel after university and thats a great idea too, you will find yourself in the exact same situation and you might even gather friends through your university course that you wish to travel with together.
the reason some people dont agree with travelling before uni is that it can throw you a bit off balance, having so much feedom and independence can cloud your judgement at times, even if you are learning and experiencing new things! some people need to jump striaght into uni or they just loose interest in going, i mean a year or two IS a long time really, alot can happen and your mind will definately change on some matters and this is one of the biggies.
if you are looking into it then only yourself can decide, going travelling is very scary to begin with, but only you will know whats best for yourself, and the right option to take. whatever you choose, traveling and gap years are great experiences and probably some of the best you will ever have. you will meet great people along the way, locals, fellow travellers, people in the same boat as you and it can only give you memories which you cherish for the rest of your life. (cheesy, but very very true) everyone deserves a bit of adventure in thier lives!
It completely depends on you, the right thing for one person may not be right for someone else. I took a gap year both before AND after uni, and had very different experiences both times. I think if you’re unsure what to do at uni or not sure what you want, some time out can help you focus. I was like this and when I finally went to uni after my gap year I was much more prepared and enthusiastic about learning again.
The first gap year I spent working in the US, the second travelling. I think second time round I was much braver and got more out of it, but there are so many different things out there you can do it depends what you want.
All I would say is that there are very few times in your life when you get the opportunity to spend a year travelling/doing what you want, as once you settle into a career etc its harder to break away. So whatever you choose to do, just make the most of it!
