i lived in europe for 32 years – in wales.
the cheapest and easist of all those places to fly into is london heathrow airport – also the cheapest, this is from years of flying back and forth from the usa to europe and trying to find the cheapest way to do it.
tour around britain – dont forget wales, it very beautiful and scotland also, forget ireland unless you have a real yearning as it would be a whole other trip/flight/sail.
then the next obvious would be to go to the south of england and either sail (90 minutes) or channel tunnel it to france, or you can fly from any uk airport real cheap, wales has cardiff airport, and england has bristol which both has the cheapest flights to europe.
then you can do paris and the usual french stuff, stay north and visit germany then italy, then you can cut back into the south of france visit st tropez then go over the pyrenees to spain, either by plane or cheaper by coach.

whichever way you do this you can say goodbye to at least 5000 dollars coz flights are way up at the moment. plus the exchange rate is not good with the euro – and it is truly terrible with the pound, 1 dollar is only worth aroun 50 pence (half a pound)

I’m planning a trip to Europe myself as well. The cheapest place that I’ve found is Dublin, Ireland. But I’m coming from the East coast.

Flights to Ireland are at least $1,200 and if you start in Ireland it makes it easy to do a nice circle around Europe. I advise this because it is always cheaper for round trips.

Of course if you were to circle Europe you’ve got to end it in Spain, not just for Madrid or Barcelona but the little town of Bunol. During the last week of August a festival occurs filled with parties and other festivities including the most organized foodfight in Europe. THE TOMATOE FIGHT!!!

Hamburg, Germany is Germany´s boomtown — it would be my favorite choice.
