New South Wales central touring location?

kaznaid asked:

Hubby and I are visiting Australia in February 2010. We are staying in Sydney, then travelling down to Wollongong for a wedding. We then have 5 days during which we plan to drive to North NSW for the rest of our stay.

We are thinking of staying somewhere central as a base – two places we have read about are Port MacQuarie and Coffs Harbour. Would either of these two would be the best central location?

Far north coast of NSW is the best… Byron Bay in particular but all surrounding areas there are fantastic, beautiful beaches, snorkelling, tropical forests, waterfalls… paradise, really!

Also if when you’re in the Coffs / Port Mac area you should take a side trip to Booti Booti National Park – Elizabeth Beach is amazing!

Port Macquarie( note correct spelling) would be the pick of those places.

Port Macquarie is the better place to stay. It is a much nicer town than Coffs Harbour.

Coffs is not a very nice town any more. It is tired and the accommodation is really tired. Stick with Port Macquarie for your visit. I can recommend the Rydges, the Mantra Quayside or the Macquarie Waters Boutique apartments. These are all good properties and are central to the town.
