Where is the place to go for a gap year?

Jordan C asked:

I am considering taking a break from work to go on a gap year. I’ve been thinking about Australia but it just seems so far away, and with the world in an economic crisis there might be no jobs available etc. Is it possible to travel about and get different jobs as i go? What about USA or Canada? Is there any good websites to get some info? Thanks!

i had a good friend who went down to south America and traveled around Brazil and Argentina and chili and all of those amazing places and he said it was the coolest and most beneficial thing he had ever done. also he said that money wise that it was great!

also i lived in Australia for a few years and even though i lived there for so long everyday that country astounded me, it is beautiful every corner of the country. there are so many attractions like ayres rock and the blue mountains and Sydney. although it might be a little more expensive to travel Australia probably not too much

Travel, it will broaden your experience. I had never left the country till I was 48 and I have been to lots of countries. Go to SE Asia and get out of the city and see how rural people live and survive. Haven’t you wondered how a person can live on $3 dollars a day and what they doo to make ends meet. Write a book visit a Wat in Thailand’s Issan provences. Go to Malaysia or Indonesia or Cambodia or Laos or Viet nam. I highly recommend it. Look for jobs teaching English the pay isn’t great but it will cover your expenses.

    you have 2 main options:

    1) working abroad. It’s quite hard to get jobs as you go – especially ones that pay good money. Getting on a working holiday is a cheap way to really get to know a country. Even though you pay for them they can work out to be a very efficient way of travelling and offer amazing experiences.

    2) Otherwise travel to a cheap places like South East Asia. Australia can be pretty cheap as well if you book hostels in advance and plan well as you can cook in most hostels too.

If you are going alone, I would definitely go to Australia.

It being so far away is just a mindset, yeah it is a horribly long flight, but that is only 24hours of suffering, once you are there you will forget all about it.

I would go there because there are sooo many other Brits there doing the same thing – it will be easier for you to make friends, there will be more services available for people like you, and you will def be able to find work as long as your standards for enjoyment are low.

I live in Canada, but am an Australian, and Canada is just too bland, and also gap years are still a foreign concept to Canadians, whereas in Australia it is a lot more well known and therefore caters to people like yourself on a much bigger level.
