Any good ideas on how to spend a gap year?

Ellie asked:

I am considering taking a gap year before i go to uni. I am planning to go to medical school and therefore i really need to do something worthwhile in my year off. If anyone has done anything amazing and worthwhile in their gap year i would be interested to hear and im open to ideas?

Voluntary work with an accredited NGO in a developing country. It would be a very rewarding experience and also very educational. Oops are you over 18? If it’s not possible voluntary work in your community. There must be plenty of organisations who would appreciate your help.

Doing something constructive and positive for the places you travel to is definitely gaining popularity these days for gap years.

Even though you often have to pay for volunteering holidays they actually work out extremely good value because most include all accommodation and food as well as some travel and a wealth of experience.

Responsible Travel searches lots of gap year companies and The Traveller’s Lounge has a good breakdown of what you could do.
